On the cusp of a historic celestial event, a young astronomer finds herself alone in the country with an unexpected visitor.

SYNOPSIS

July 18, 1994. In what would prove to be one of the most singular and spectacular astronomical events ever recorded, the recently discovered Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet races toward the surface of Jupiter, where it will collide in a dazzling heavenly display.

For amateur astronomer Audrey, it’s the chance of a lifetime. Packing up her telescope, she drives to the remote countryside to observe the event. There in the rural hills, she finds a perfect location at the edge of a lonely cornfield.

Night falls as Audrey settles in, and soon she hears encroaching footsteps in the dark. She’s relieved to find that it’s merely Devon, the land owner, investigating her makeshift camp. To her surprise, he recognizes her. Not only did they recently share a class together, they also have a few mutual acquaintences.

Though awkward, Devon seems friendly enough, and he shares her interest in astronomy. Soon, however, his manner takes a dark turn, and Audrey’s attempt to escape the situation is thwarted when she discovers her car keys missing from the ignition switch where she left them. Without another soul around for miles, she strikes out on foot, alone in the night, with Devon in steady pursuit.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Strange Constellation is the third and final chapter in a cycle of short films about the destructive effects of unresolved grief. Unlike its predecessors, Ens Rationis (2019) and The Walls Alike and Madding (2021), this story is planted firmly in the real world, where the horror is neither supernatural nor mysterious, but mundane and all too common.

While previous chapters explored their themes from internal points of view, Strange Constellation circles it from the outside. It’s the story of an innocent bystander whose orbit is invaded by a grieving stranger’s destructive descent into darkness.

What I love about Audrey (and Myeisha’s powerful portrayal) is that she refuses to become another victim in the chain reaction of trauma. She may not escape the night unscathed, but whatever happens, we sense that she’s too strong to be destroyed by this potentially explosive impact on her world.

The film was shot on location in rural Nebraska, in the blistering heat of late summer. Two weeks of late-night shooting acquainted the cast and crew with twisted ankles, poison ivy, and thousands of curious insects who made their jobs more than a little difficult. I’m incredibly proud of our team, who soldiered through the elements to tell this story, which reflects the heartbreaking real life experiences of so many.
